A section of 5th Street in Watervliet will close overnight Oct. 27 as crews install storm sewer infrastructure under the city’s Combined Sewer Overflow elimination project, according to a city construction update.
The closure between 2nd Avenue and 4th Avenue is scheduled from 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, to 3 a.m. Oct. 28. Access will be maintained for residents only. Third Avenue will remain open, with flaggers directing traffic through the work area during a nighttime utility crossing.
The city’s update outlines work by Luizzi from Oct. 26 through Nov. 6 as part of the project’s second phase.
During the week of Oct. 26, daytime work will continue at 3rd Avenue and 5th Street. Drivers should expect flaggers and lane shifts on 3rd Avenue as construction progresses south. Beginning the week of Nov. 2, that crew’s work is scheduled to move to the 6th Avenue alley between 1st and 2nd streets.
A second crew will continue daytime work on 7th Street between 3rd and 6th avenues through the week of Nov. 2. Other crews will cut pavement and restore topsoil and surfaces in previously completed work areas during normal daytime hours.
The city said active work areas will have construction noise, equipment traffic and temporary parking restrictions. Driveway and business access will be maintained whenever possible. Drivers are advised to use alternate routes and follow flaggers’ directions.
The city describes the project as an infrastructure upgrade intended to manage stormwater runoff and protect Hudson River water quality.
